Wheat Street Junction

Wheat Street works began as planned on 5 May 2026 and are anticipated to be completed by Winter 2026-27.

Further works will be carried out in advance of commencement of the Leicester Road Gyratory Scheme, and updates regarding this will be shared in due course.

Road and footway closures and diversion routes

The plans below show the road and footway closures with diversion routes which will come into force at specific times during the works.

For everyone’s safety please ensure the diversion routes, which will be signposted, are strictly followed.

Please accept our sincere apologies in advance as we understand the following closures may cause some inconvenience.

Closure dates:

  • 31 July to 3 August
  • 7 August to 10 August
  • 14 August to 17 August
  • 21 August to 24 August
  • 4 September to 7 September
  • 18 September to 21 September

Closure times: 8pm Friday evening until up to 4am Monday morning.

Information: Wheat Street from its junction with Bond Gate and Bridge Street will be closed, along with the entire length of Justice Walk to its junction with Church Street.

Please follow any signed diversion routes and allow extra time for your journey during these closures.

Diversion route:

Justice Walk/Wheat Street Mini-Roundabout diversion route

Vehicles will be diverted via Vicarage Street to continue journeys north, with journeys to the south largely unaffected.

People walking can continue to use the footway on the east side of Vicarage Street, using the signalised crossings.

Closure date: 5 May 2026 until winter 2026-27

Information: Wheat Street (East of Vicarage Street) will be closed to traffic between its junction with Vicarage Street and the Orchard Street car park.

Orchard Street car park and courts remain open. Vehicles must follow the signed diversion via Church Street.

Diversion route:

Vehicles arriving or exiting the Wheat Street area to the west of Vicarage Street will need to use Regent Street or King Edward Road / Church Street.

Pedestrians are unaffected, but please follow signed footway routes.

Information:

The eastern footway on Vicarage Street will be closed to pedestrians.

Appropriate diversion routes will be signposted and pedestrian barriers erected on site from the date of closure.

Pedestrians are to use the footway on the other side of the road, using the signalised crossings.

Information:

Wheat Street (West of Vicarage Street) will be closed to pedestrians and vehicles.

There will be no access through Justice Walk Car Park which was closed on 7th April 2026.

Justice Walk Car Park will be closed except for Blue Badge holders. If required, the ticket machine will remain operational.

Diversion route:

Pedestrians will need to use Vicarage Street, Church Street and Justice Walk for journeys to the south of the closure.

Pedestrians will need to use Vicarage Street, Leicester Road, Bond Street and Wheat Street for journeys to the north of the closure.

Diversion routes will be signposted on site.
