Wheat Street/Vicarage Street Junction

Wheat Street Junction

WCC are pleased to announce that construction of the A444 Wheat Street Junction Improvement Scheme will be commencing on the 5th May 2026. This scheme is programmed to be built in two phases. The first phase addresses the eastern connection to the A444 Vicarage Street Ring Road from Wheat Street in Nuneaton, and will feature:

  • Connection of Wheat Street with Vicarage Street with a new 4 arm traffic signal-controlled junction.
  • New mini roundabout at junction with Justice Walk.
  • A new cycle path and segregated footpath.
  • A new 2nd pedestrian/cycle crossing on south side of new Wheat Street/Vicarage Street junction.

The combination of these changes will result in better flow of traffic, and much better and safer provision for those wishing to walk or cycle into town from the east side of the ring road.

WCC is working closely with Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council (NBBC) to minimise disruption in the area, but for more information, please check our noticeboards in the library and on Justice Walk, or check the Vicarage Street webpage.

The works on Phase 1 are anticipated to be completed by Winter 2026.

The second phase will be carried out in advanced of commencement of the Leicester Road Gyratory Scheme and will feature:

  • Widening, particularly on Wheat Street west is needed to provide the required number of lanes and alignment to connect to Bond Gate.
  • Provide two-way access along Bond Gate to allow vehicles to travel southbound.
  • Provide cycle and pedestrian facilities/links where possible.

You can keep up to date on progress by visiting page 8 - updates.

Original proposals

The proposal is to upgrade the existing three arm signalised junction at Wheat Street and Vicarage Street to a four arm signalised junction, by opening up Wheat Street to the west of this junction. The fourth arm is to be one way for vehicles travelling onto the ring road.

Justice Walk will remain one way for vehicles, with a contra-flow cycle lane being installed alongside it. This area is to be improved as part of the Transforming Nuneaton programme. Bond Gate will become two way and will eventually form a link to the new Leicester Road Gyratory scheme.

New toucan crossings are to be installed to assist pedestrians and cyclists’ movements across the improved junction.

The existing segregated cycle route along the inside of the ring road will be improved to allow cyclists to move more easily through the area.

In order to facilitate the main works, there will be some changes to the junction at Bond Street, Back Street and Newtown Road, which will help to ease traffic movements through the area and provide a temporary link prior to the new Leicester Road Gyratory being installed.
