Our objectives

The key objective of s278 schemes is to reduce congestion and increase safety in the localised area. This includes:

  • Providing improved junctions via signalised gyratories thus reducing traffic delays incurred through the junction and minimise the likelihood of traffic queues.
  • Improved road safety for all road users via the replacement of the priority crossroads at the top of the slip roads with a signalised gyratory roundabout which will minimise conflict. The provision of shared footway/cycleways throughout a junction, toucan crossing points across  slip roads just some of the areas that will further enhance road safety.
  • Assisting in mitigating the localised road network including the strategic road network against the potential construction impacts of HS2 due to roads in the area impacted by an increase in capacity at a key sections due to HS2 construction vehicles.
  • Improved journey times through improved junctions and sections, as queues are minimised due to the improved operational efficiency and flow to ensure an increase in capacity.
  • Improved access to/from the strategic route network (SRN) to the local road network which supports key employment, housing and development sites.

It should be emphasised that works which directly affect the SRN are considered outside of this programme, but independently as a separate matter by National Highways and not bound by the contents of our documents.

The SRN both borders and runs through Warwickshire and certain locations interface directly with the local road network.

National Highways would be consulted at an early stage, on any highway proposals which would impact on the SRN (trunk roads and motorways).

We are proud to be working with a number of developers supporting them to deliver a robust road infrastructure tied into housing developments across the county - in line with planning conditions granted at approval stage.

Our colleagues in Network Management are instrumental when it comes to network planning and keeping the road network flowing, to limit congestion where possible, mitigate risk and inconvenience to our road users and residents across the county.
