Warwick Road cycle route, Kenilworth
Background
We are developing proposals to improve walking, wheeling and cycling facilities along Warwick Road in Kenilworth between Rouncil Lane and Wilkshire Road. The proposed scheme is part of our programme of new cycle routes to enable more people to cycle for short local journeys, helping to tackle congestion, improve air quality, reduce carbon emissions, and support physical activity. The project aims to improve connections between existing residential areas, local sports clubs and the wider cycle network, while encouraging more sustainable travel choices. The new route will help improve connections between Kenilworth and Leek Wootton, as well as links to the town centre, school, train station and onwards to Coventry and the University of Warwick. Further proposals (to provide a cycle route northwards from Rouncil Lane and connections to the Kenilworth to Leamington (K2L) Cycle Route) will be shared on this page when they are available.
Scheme description
The proposed scheme would provide:
- a continuous shared footway/cycle track along Warwick Road between Rouncil Lane and Wilkshire Road by converting or widening sections of existing footway, verge and carriageway space. This includes a continuous section across the entrance for Kenilworth Cricket Club and Kenilworth Bridge Club.
- a zebra crossing with parallel cycle crossing across Warwick Road just south of the junction with Rouncil Lane. This would be placed on a road hump to help slow down vehicles, and therefore replace the two speed cushions currently at this location. A new shared footway and cycle track will link around the corner of Rouncil Lane to Suncliffe Drive
- an inline priority crossing for pedestrians and cyclists at the junction of Newey Drive and Warwick Road. This would be placed on a road hump, to slow down vehicles and provide a level surface for walking, wheeling and cycling.
Proposed footway conversion, road hump and zebra (parallel) crossing, September 2026
Warwickshire County Council proposes:
- pursuant to sections 65 and 66 of the Highways Act 1980, to convert parts of existing footways on Warwick Road, Rouncil Lane and Suncliffe Drive, Kenilworth into shared use footways/cycle tracks for use by pedestrians and cyclists.
- pursuant to Section 90A of the Highways Act 1980, to install a road hump (with priority crossing for pedestrians and cyclists) on Warwick Road at its junction with Newey Drive, Kenilworth
- pursuant to section 23 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, to install a road hump with a parallel crossing for pedestrians and cyclists on Warwick Road, Kenilworth (replacing existing speed cushions), ten metres south of the junction with Rouncil Lane.

Other projects
This scheme forms part of Warwickshire County Council's wider programme of walking, wheeling and cycling improvements across Warwickshire. The aim is to create safer and more attractive routes that enable more people to choose active travel for everyday journeys. Detailed proposals and scheme priorities are set out in the Warwickshire Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan. Making it easier for people to walk, wheel and cycle for short local journeys will also help to tackle congestion, improve air quality, reduce carbon emissions, and support an increase in physical activity.
