What happens when I first arrive?

  • We meet young people when they have arrived in the country and have come to the attention of the authorities, usually the police.
  • At the police station we ensure that you make the first steps to claim asylum if you want to, and if you are a child (under 18) you will be placed in our care.
  • We will make sure that you will have a safe place to stay. This could be a foster placement or semi-independent living, depending on your age and your needs.

A foster placement means that you will be living with a family who will take care of you. They will make sure that you have enough to eat, enough clothes and they will help you get used to the new area where you are living.

Semi-independent living means that you will stay in a shared house with other young people who have also claimed asylum in the UK.
