Protected species in Warwickshire

European protected species (EPS) are protected under the Conservation Regulations.

EPS found in Warwickshire include:

  • all species of bat
  • great crested newt
  • otter
  • dormouse
  • white-clawed crayfish

Other species protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act and the Protection of Badgers Act  and often encountered through the planning process include:

  • water vole
  • all nesting birds
  • all species of reptile
  • Badger

Some species are also given a certain level of protection within the planning process as they are either a UK or local biodiversity action plan (BAP) species, and often both.

There are notable species in Warwickshire which are Species of Principal Importance under the NERC Act 2006 and Local Biodiversity Action Plan species.
