Longer term measures

Proposals Effect of proposals
8a. New road link between Western Road and Hamlet Way.

An element of the land required for the link road forms part of the Heritage Steam Centre proposal which was granted planning consent in 2011. The planning consent has
since lapsed. Negotiations would be required with the promoters of the steam centre who own the site to acquire the necessary land.

  • Improved connectivity between east and west Stratford. The proposed link via Hamlet Way, if combined with the new access into the Tesco site, would improve access to Tesco/Maybird Centre from west Stratford without the need to travel via the Birmingham Road.
  • Journey time savings associated with new link road.
  • Impact on residential properties of increased traffic routing via Hamlet Way.
8b. New road link between Western Road and Maybrook Road.

Both of these are longer term proposals that could not come forward until the Cattle Market had been redeveloped and the existing business premises relocated.

  • Improved connectivity between east and west Stratford.
  • Land take implications for Canal Quarter redevelopment (for Wharf Road option).
  • Attracts more traffic to Wharf Road / Birmingham Road junction which is an uncontrolled junction and may lead to localised congestion.
  • Longer term option that could not come forward until the Cattle Market had been redeveloped and the existing business premises relocated.
9. In conjunction with proposal 8A or 8B, conversion of the Western Road junction to a left-in, left-out junction (with the exception of buses turning right out of Western Road which would still need to be signal-controlled).
  • Journey time savings associated with modification to Western Road junction. These are more significant than the benefits brought about by the proposal for a new link road. However the modifications to the Western Road junction could not be delivered without the new link road itself.
