Apply for free school meals (FSM)
Schools should provide meal options for all children attending school. Meals should be available free of charge to
- all infant pupils (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2)
- pupils who meet the benefits-related free school meals eligibility criteria.
During the COVID-19 pandemic - When will free school meals be provided?
If your child usually receives benefits-related FSM and is not attending school because they are ill then, as is usually the case, the school will not be required to provide FSM.
However, if your child usually receives benefits related FSM and is well, but not attending school because they have been asked to stay at home to isolate because they have been in close contact with someone with a positive COVID-19 test result, the school should provide your child with a daily FSM or a food parcel, dependent upon what arrangements they have in place with their caterers. You will need to ask your child’s school for details of the provisions in place at the school.
For the holiday periods, the Warwickshire Local Welfare Scheme will support families with children registered to be in receipt of benefits-related FSM. This does not apply to infant pupil universal offer for FSM. To qualify for the Warwickshire Welfare Scheme support, you must be registered for benefits-related FSM. Please call 0800 4081448 and speak with one of our advisers.
Reasons to apply for benefits-related free school meals
If you think you may be eligible for benefits-related FSM, but have not applied before because of the universal offer for FSM available for infant children, you may wish to reconsider this and apply now. Doing so will mean your child’s school does not miss out on additional funding.
To be able to receive funding for the holiday periods, children must be registered for benefits-related FSM.
Families can apply for FSM at any time online through the Parent Portal.
