Brownies

The following are requirements to gain your Road Safety badge.

  • Take a photograph or draw a picture of a safe crossing place, and an unsafe crossing place, showing you understand the difference.
Why not get out and about with other Brownies and find some safe and unsafe places to cross within walking distance of your meeting place. Talk about why you think they are good or bad
  • Know the Green Cross Code and explain how to cross the road safely.
To help you remember the Green Cross Code, make up a short story about you and your friends on your way to your Brownie meeting.
  • Design an outfit to help someone be easily seen when walking near roads or in bad weather - describe what materials you would use and why.
Find as many ideas as you can from magazines and make up a design board with samples of materials and your sketches.
  • Design a cycle helmet - know why wearing a helmet is very important.
Find as many ideas as you can from magazines and make up a design board with samples of materials and your sketches.
  • Know the order of traffic lights and what different colours mean and design a game or activity for other Brownies based on traffic lights.
This is a tricky one, so make sure you check the Highway code first. Then, try the game on your parents/carers to see if they get it right!
  • Look at the road signs and markings shown in the Highway Code. Look at the difference between circular, triangular and rectangular signs. Point out the differences of each and explain what they mean. Explain the meaning of some signs and markings when shown a picture.
Make up a SNAP card game using the different shapes and challenge other Brownies.
  • Know how to keep safe when going out without an adult. Make a poster or game about what to do if lost or separated from friends.
Write a list of all the things which you should NOT do near busy roads, then write a similar list for things which make you a good car passenger.
