Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service have launched an online education hub today, to enable them to deliver safety lessons to children while they are off school.
The hub, which was set to launch in September, was originally created to support the schools programme, which has been running in schools across Warwickshire for over 20 years. During that time, the programme has had a significant impact on change behaviour and raising a generation of young people who are fire safety aware. Therefore, the deadline for the launch has been moved, to help assist those students who may have missed out on a fire service visit in the last few weeks.
The interactive online programme is aimed at children in Key stage 1 and 2, and provides an engaging way for the children to learn about what firefighters do, what they wear and the difference between safe and unsafe fires. It also features the story of Freckle and Dexter and the mischief the two dogs get up to.
Moving into Key stage 2, the programme teaches the children how to make an escape plan, how to spot potential fire hazards in the home and the dangers of making hoax calls.
Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Services, Community Fire Prevention and Arson Manager, Moreno Francioso said:
“With the current pandemic we are conscious that a number of children will miss out on their normal fire service visit. So, we thought it was imperative to find alternative ways to get this essential information across to them. With some innovative thinking, we are pleased that learning can still be delivered to those children still attending school thorough the pandemic and to those learning at home.
“Fire safety is an essential part of a child’s learning and development to help to keep them safe, both now and in the future. We really hope that all Warwickshire children will go online and have a go at using the new online hub as part of their learning experience while in lockdown. Most importantly we hope they have lots of fun answering the questions, playing the games and listening to how Dexter gets into trouble when cooking a pizza.”
