Warwickshire County Council is supporting National Clean Air Day on Thursday June 20th 2019, as part of the Coventry and Warwickshire “Choose How You Move” active travel campaign, encouraging people to walk, cycle or use public transport instead of the car
National Clean Air Day helps to raise awareness of the steps we can all take to reduce air pollution and its effects. Everyone can be affected by air pollution, but it has the most impact on young children and people with existing heart and lung conditions. Air pollution can also affect how babies develop in the womb, and is linked with low birth weight and being born prematurely.
Councillor Les Caborn, portfolio holder for Adult Social Care and Health said:
“Warwickshire County Council are keen to raise awareness of air pollution and how this can impact our health, along with steps we can all take to improve air quality, particularly in our urban areas.
“Travelling actively helps to reduce air pollution and there are many steps we can all take to build this in to our daily routines. Leaving the car at home, whether it’s for 1 day a week or for part of your journey is a great change to make. Reducing car trips can protect the health of others and increasing physical activity is another way of improving how you feel physically and mentally.
“There are also things people can do to reduce air pollution indoors, such as burning only dry seasoned wood if they have a log burner, making sure to ventilate homes and using “low VOC” paints and varnishes”
Top tips to improve air quality:
1) Think about leaving the car at home - even for just one day per week. Plan your journey here:

2) Could you cycle or walk to work/school?

3) Have you thought about car share? https://carsharewarwickshire.liftshare.com/
4) Be sure to switch off your engine when you’re in stationary traffic or parked (and it’s safe to do so).
5) Choose your next vehicle wisely – have you thought about an LPG or electric vehicle?

6) Burn only dry, seasoned wood if you have a log burner, make sure to ventilate your house, and use “low VOC” paints and varnishes.
