Your mental health matters and with one in four people experiencing a mental illness at some point in their life, Warwickshire County Council is calling for residents to make a positive lifestyle change for their mental health and wellbeing.

Throughout the month of May, WCC will highlight different areas where people can take steps to improve their wellbeing, maintain positive mental health or reduce experiences of low mood and stress.

Mental health can impact everyone differently across all aspects of life and WCC has a range of resources and services available to provide a place for help and support for those who need it. Find out more at http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/mentalhealth

Paternal mental health can impact parents during pregnancy and following the birth of a child. As expectant or new parents, it can be common to feel unhappy or low and it is important to gain the support you need, more information can be found at https://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/newparents

Mental health awareness week raises awareness about the broad range of issues that can affect people and their mental health. Events will be held across Warwickshire to provide further information about the support available throughout the county; more information is available below.

Dementia is a broad term used to describe a number of different conditions affecting the brain and affects one in 14 people over the age of 65. There is support available throughout Warwickshire for anyone concerned about dementia, currently living with dementia or caring for someone with dementia. Information is also available on local dementia-friendly communities, including organisations and groups who are dementia friendly. Find out more at dementia.warwickshire.gov.uk

Cllr Les Caborn, WCC Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Whether a person has ever had a diagnosed mental health problem or not, having self-care strategies in place to help them feel better during stressful days makes it easier to maintain good wellbeing and deal with the challenges life brings.

“Self-care will mean different things to different people but ultimately it’s about making a choice that will benefit your body and mind - whether it’s taking up daily exercise, taking an hour to read a chapter of your book, having a phone call with a friend or getting an early night.”

The county council is also aiming to highlight the importance of parent and infant mental health and promote the various services and activities available in Warwickshire for people living with dementia and their loved ones or carers.

A series of events and activities aimed at raising awareness of the importance of good mental health will take place throughout the month:
