Some special VE Day activities to tie in with the national celebrations on Bank Holiday Friday are just some of the delightful digital pastimes that the county’s Heritage & Culture and Libraries services will be sharing with people in Warwickshire next week (w/c 4th May).

Loads of wonderful activities that residents can get involved with at home have been created by Warwickshire County Council employees, so individuals and families can continue to experience museums and libraries services despite their buildings being shut.

On Wednesday (6th May), there will be a special library blog published at https://librariesblog.warwickshire.gov.uk commemorating VE Day.

And on Bank Holiday Friday (8th May), Heritage & Culture will be posting a brand new VE Day Family Activity, ‘Make Do and Mend Junk Modelling’, on their website at http://heritage.warwickshire.gov.uk/warwickshire-museum-in-your-home/. The online activity will challenge families to be resourceful and see what they can make out of recycled materials to decorate their homes.

There are many more virtual pastimes that people can take part in next week!

At 10am on Monday (4th May) morning, visit the Warwickshire Libraries Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/warwickshirelibraries/) to get involved in an excellent new Rhyme Time session, with rhymes and songs ideal for 0 to 2 year old children, their parents and carers.

Usually held in library buildings across Warwickshire, the virtual Rhyme Time session had 3,000 views on Facebook when it premiered this week. Monday’s session will be brought to you by Beth from Warwickshire Libraries, who will be hosting the Facebook event.

Young children can also get involved in Arty Tots from Home on Monday! Join in songs, crafts and games you can simply do at home with your under 5s. Monday’s theme is ‘What’s the weather like today? – so could be sun or rain-based! Visit http://heritage.warwickshire.gov.uk/arty-tots-at-home/.

On Monday and Wednesday lunch time at 12.30pm, join Warwickshire Libraries on Twitter (@warkslibraries) for a book-themed #LunchtimeLibraryChat. Monday’s theme is ‘Magical world or a realistic world in your fiction? Or a mixture of both?’ and Wednesday’s theme is ‘Best/worst book/film adaptations’, so there should be lots to chat about!

On Monday there will also be a new weekly Warwickshire Libraries update newsletter, featuring all the current news on digital library services. Sign up to obtain the weekly update at https://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/keepmeposted.

On Tuesday (5th May), Warwickshire County Council Chief Executive, Monica Fogarty, will follow in the footsteps of Tom Hardy, Dolly Parton and Orlando Bloom, who have all famously told bedtime stories on TV in recent years, by narrating a children’s story with a special road safety theme.

Monica has volunteered her time to read ‘Warwick Bear: Tooting Trucks and Busy Bikes’, the latest book to be created for Warwickshire County Council’s Road Safety Club, for a special online bedtime story.

The illustrated story, which has been developed with Diane Maybey, a children’s author and illustrator based in Warwick, can be watched on Warwickshire County Council’s social media channels, including Warwickshire Libraries on Twitter (@warkslibraries) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/warwickshirelibraries/) on Tuesday at 6pm.

Also on Tuesday, discover what the Heritage and Culture Warwickshire team are working on from home on their website at http://heritage.warwickshire.gov.uk/workingfromhome/. Each week, a different member of the team will be sharing information on what they are working on while the museums and archives buildings are shut.

Keep your eyes peeled for the publication of a new book review from a member of libraries staff on Facebook ~ on Tuesday, it’s ‘Crooked Heart’ by Lissa Evans, reviewed by Kate ~ which may give you an idea as to what to loan next week from Warwickshire’s online library service, BorrowBox, which you can access for free at https://library.warwickshire.gov.uk.

All you need are your library card number and email address. If you’re not already a member, you can join online. Hundreds of people already have in recent weeks!

On Wednesday (6th May), ‘Warwickshire Museum in your Home’ will bring to you a taste of the activities they would normally hold in their museums at this time of year. Wednesday’s historic theme is ‘Discover the Victorians’. Visit http://heritage.warwickshire.gov.uk/warwickshire-museum-in-your-home/.

On Thursday (7th May), there will be a special library blog published at https://librariesblog.warwickshire.gov.uk for ‘Dying Matters Week 2020’, which will look at the available resources for having difficult conversations.

Also on Thursday, you can meet the Heritage & Culture Warwickshire team. Each week, get to know a member of staff and discover more about their job role, their favourite article or archive, and extra interesting facts! Go to http://heritage.warwickshire.gov.uk/meet-the-hcw-team/.

On Bank Holiday Friday (8th May), get involved in an online ‘Show and Tell: Tales from the Collections’ as archivists and curators in Heritage and Culture share a talk with you on YouTube, so you can find out about the Warwickshire archives and museum collections from home. Friday’s heritage theme is ‘Letter from Egypt’. Visit http://heritage.warwickshire.gov.uk/show-and-tell-from-home/.

Then at 6pm on Friday, join in with an incredible Facebook Story Time session, suitable for all the family! Enjoy a story-telling session with Katie from Warwickshire Libraries as she reads ‘Monkey Puzzle’ at https://www.facebook.com/warwickshirelibraries/.

On Saturday (9th May), uncover the tales of ‘Our Warwickshire’ with a virtual quiz, where your family can answer questions about history, heritage and the natural environment by delving through the pages of the Our Warwickshire website. The website comprises thousands of photos, stories, memories, and maps uploaded by local people, museums and archives. Go to http://heritage.warwickshire.gov.uk/our-warwickshire-quiz-from-home/.

Also on Saturday, there’s no need for children to miss out on the fun provided by the popular Lego Clubs that are normally held in Warwickshire’s libraries, as they can get involved in a new Facebook Lego Challenge at home each week. Like and follow the Warwickshire Libraries Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/warwickshirelibraries/ and check every Saturday morning for the latest challenge!

Finally, on Sunday (10th May), it’s the ‘Where in Warwickshire?’ contest. Follow the clues on social media to a Warwickshire place or landmark, which will be shared on the Warwickshire Archive Twitter account @Chambearlin.
