Throughout March Warwickshire County Council will be sharing information and ideas on how you can help yourself to #liveyourbestlife. This week the focus is on finding fulfilment by embracing life-long learning, volunteering, mentoring and even changing your career.

It is never too late to learn

Taking opportunities to learn at all points in life can be incredibly fulfilling. It has been shown that when you are constantly pushing yourself to learn your mental and brain health improves, together with your self-esteem and confidence. There are many opportunities to increase your knowledge and develop new skills throughout your life and in these days of the internet anything you can imagine is at your fingertips. Feel good by giving something back

Another great way of improving your life is by sharing your life skills and knowledge through volunteering and mentoring. Aside from the obvious feel-good factor you get from giving your time to help others volunteering also has many other benefits, some of them unexpected. Volunteering connects you to others, is good for your mind and body, helps you to gain new skills and brings fun and fulfilment to your life. By meeting new people volunteering strengthens your ties to your community and can help you to improve your social skills and this aspect can have a profound effect on your overall psychological and physical well-being.

Volunteering Matters is a national charity and they are working with local councils across the country, including Warwickshire, on a project called Grandmentor. This initiative pairs volunteer mentors who are over 50 years old with young care leavers, including unaccompanied asylum seekers. The parings are carefully made to make sure the mentors are the right people to offer the right help and advice in each case. Volunteering Matters need many more volunteer Grandmentors to support young people with life and language skills, so if you think you have valuable knowledge and would like to support young people to #livetheirbestlife regardless of their background visit their website to find out more: https://volunteeringmatters.org.uk/project/grandmentors/
