Supporting Occupational Therapy Week
Supporting Occupational Therapy Week

Occupational therapy supports people of all ages to continue living independent, fulfilling lives by overcoming challenges and helping them find ways to perform daily routines, tasks and activities.

Warwickshire County Council (WCC) is proud to support Occupational Therapy Week 2026 (Monday 2 to Sunday 8 November), shining a spotlight on the outstanding work of the Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants across the Council in Adult Social Care, Learning Disabilities, the Home Environment Assessment and Response Team (HEART) and Reablement Service.

Real-life stories demonstrate that by intervening early, occupational therapists help people stay well for longer, prevent crises, support recovery and reduce long-term care needs and ease pressure on services.

Every day, occupational therapy professionals help Warwickshire residents regain confidence, improve personal safety and maintain independence in their own homes.

One resident who received support commented:

"Thank you, I feel safer now with track hoist fitted". Another family member described how equipment provided by an occupational therapist gave them reassurance that their 96-year-old mother could remain safe at home. A Warwickshire resident was finding it increasingly difficult to access key areas of their home due to mobility difficulties. Following an assessment through HEART, adaptations were arranged to improve access and safety. The changes enabled the resident to continue living independently in familiar surroundings and continue taking part in the everyday activities that mattered most to them.

Occupational therapists work with people to identify practical solutions that enable them to remain active, independent and connected to their communities. Sometimes a small change, such as the right piece of equipment, a home adaptation or a different way of approaching a task, can have a significant impact on a person's confidence, wellbeing and ability to live independently.

Reablement Service
Warwickshire’s Reablement Service provides person-centred support to help people regain confidence, skills and independence.

Home Environment Assessment and Response team (HEART)
HEART is a partnership between WCC and the District and Borough Councils, supporting residents of all ages to live safely and comfortably at home through tailored housing adaptations, repairs, and by simplifying grants and loans.

Learning Disabilities Team
The Learning Disabilities Occupational Therapy team in Warwickshire provides specialist, person-centred assessment and referral support to help adults and children with learning disabilities live as independently as possible.

Warwickshire County Councillor Anne-Marie Sonko, Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care and Health, said:

"Occupational Therapy Week is an opportunity to recognise the invaluable contribution our occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants make in communities across Warwickshire.

"This year's theme, Participation Changes Everything, reflects the heart of occupational therapy - helping people of all ages do the things that matter most to them. Through early intervention, practical support and personalised solutions, occupational therapy helps residents maintain their independence, improve their wellbeing and stay connected to their families, friends and communities.

"We are proud to celebrate the dedication of our teams and the positive difference they make to people every day so that they can live well in Warwickshire."
