Lord Lieutenant with cadets
Lord Lieutenant Tim Cox meets Warwickshire Police cadets

Communities, charities, volunteers and civic organisations across Warwickshire were recognised throughout September as the county’s Lieutenancy team attended a wide range of events.

These celebrated service, achievement, heritage and citizenship. From commemorating the courage of those who defended Britain during the Second World War to recognising outstanding charitable work, welcoming new citizens and supporting future generations, the programme of engagements reflected the breadth and strength of community life across Warwickshire.

Supporting events that honour the Armed Forces community and preserve the county's military heritage remains an important part of the Lieutenancy's work. In September, Deputy Lieutenant Simon Miesegaes attended the annual Battle of Britain Memorial Service at Oaston Road Cemetery in Nuneaton, organised by 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron Air Training Corps. The service brought together veterans, cadets, community representatives and members of the public to remember the courage and sacrifice of the airmen who served during the Battle of Britain in 1940.  Oaston Road Cemetery is unique in being the final resting place of more than 40 Commonwealth war casualties, alongside 29 Polish airmen and 17 German servicemen.

Celebrating community impact, Tim Cox attended the 75th anniversary awards ceremony of New Directions at Rugby Town Hall. The event recognised the achievements of people supported by the charity, as well as the dedication of staff, volunteers and partner organisations. For 75 years, New Directions has helped people with a wide range of needs, including learning disabilities, to live more independent and fulfilling lives.

A visit to the British Motor Museum in Gaydon provided an opportunity to learn more about the museum's role in preserving Britain's automotive heritage while inspiring future generations through education, engagement programmes and support for local charities. The museum is home to more than 300 classic, vintage and veteran vehicles. The historic Lord Leycester Hospital in Warwick hosted two Lieutenancy events during the month. The first saw volunteers from across the county receive a briefing on the The King's Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award given to local voluntary groups and regarded as the equivalent of an MBE for organisations. Nominations are open until 1 December 2026.

A second event brought together recipients of the The King's Awards for Enterprise and former Queen's Awards for Enterprise winners from across Warwickshire, alongside businesses considering submitting future applications. The gathering provided an opportunity to celebrate innovation, entrepreneurship and business excellence within the county. September also saw Lieutenancy representatives attend Warwickshire Citizenship Ceremonies, welcoming new citizens and marking an important milestone as they formally became British citizens.

These ceremonies recognise the diverse communities that make a valuable contribution to the county's social, cultural and economic life. At Chesford Grange, Tim Cox joined family, friends and colleagues to celebrate the passing out of Warwickshire Police student officers. The ceremony marked the completion of their training and the beginning of their service to communities across the county.

Tim Cox said: "One of the greatest privileges of serving as Lord-Lieutenant is the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life who are making a positive difference in their communities. Throughout September, I have seen inspiring examples of dedication, service, innovation and achievement across Warwickshire.

"Whether remembering the sacrifices of previous generations, celebrating individual accomplishments, recognising the work of charities and organisations, or welcoming new citizens, these occasions demonstrate the strength, diversity and community spirit that exists throughout our county.

"I would like to thank everyone involved in organising these events for the warm welcome I received at each engagement, and to acknowledge the continued support of my Deputy Lieutenants in representing Warwickshire's communities."
