The outstanding achievements of over 100 of the county’s primary schools were celebrated recently as schools, local partners and road safety advocates came together for Warwickshire County Council's third annual Safe and Active School Awards.
The awards recognize the dedication of primary schools across the county that have actively engaged with the Council’s Safe and Active Schools Programme. Last academic year, 120 schools signed up for the initiative, ensuring that over 27,000 Warwickshire children received age-appropriate road safety education and active travel activities.
While many schools demonstrated exceptional commitment to the programme, Eastlands Primary School in Rugby took centre stage, walking away with a record-breaking four awards. Eastlands was honoured with a Long Service Award, a Platinum Award, the Active Travellers Award, and secured second place as a Road Safety Champion.
Eastlands Primary, the location of the county's first School Street, impressed the road safety team by achieving a 13% increase in active travel since last year, with 78% of children travelling actively on survey day. The school also achieved first place on the national WOW Top Ten leaderboard in October 2025.
Cllr Stephen Shaw, Warwickshire County Council's Portfolio Holder for Transport and Planning, praised the achievements of the participating schools: "The Safe and Active Schools Programme is vital in shaping positive behaviours and travel habits from an early age, giving Warwickshire residents the skills and knowledge to be safe road users for life.
"Reaching over 27,000 children across 120 schools last year is a fantastic achievement for our Road Safety team and their partners. I want to extend my congratulations to all of our award winners, with a very special mention to Eastlands Primary School in Rugby. To take home four awards is a testament to the incredible dedication of their staff, pupils, and parents in embedding both safe and active travel into the everyday fabric of their school community and the principles and benefits of taking regular exercise."
The event also shone a light on Briar Hill Infant School, which took first place as a Road Safety Champion with a staggering 55 points, and Shottery St Andrew’s C of E Primary, whose Junior Road Safety Officers ran a highly successful safer parking campaign.
Harbury C of E Primary and Oakfield Primary Academy were both recognised with Road Safety Excellence Awards for their innovative, hands-on approaches to promoting active travel and road safety within their school grounds.
