Young people from across Warwickshire have been developing confidence, resilience and valuable life skills as part of Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service's Youth Engagement Programme.
Delivered by the Service's Prevention Team, the week-long programmes took place at Nuneaton Fire Station and Stratford-upon-Avon Fire Station in August and provided young people aged 13 to 17 with the opportunity to experience life in a fire station while developing important personal and social skills.
Working in partnership with Warwickshire Youth Service, the programme welcomed young people identified as benefiting from opportunities to build self-esteem, confidence, resilience, wellbeing and a stronger sense of belonging within their communities.
Throughout the week, participants took part in a range of firefighter-inspired activities, including hose-running drills, first aid training, hydrant and pump demonstrations, team-building exercises and practical communication challenges. They also learned about fire safety, explored the consequences of arson through interactive sessions, and visited the West Midlands Fire Service Safeside Centre, where they took part in activities focused on road safety, crime prevention, water safety and home fire safety.
Colleagues from the Army Reserve's 37th Signal Regiment also joined the programme, introducing participants to the skills, teamwork and discipline required within the Armed Forces through a series of practical challenges and demonstrations.
The programme concluded with a special Passing Out Parade attended by parents and carers. The young people demonstrated the skills they had learned throughout the week, including a mock emergency incident involving firefighting and first aid elements, before receiving certificates to celebrate their achievements.

Over the course of the week we saw participants grow in confidence, work together as a team and develop skills that will benefit them far beyond their time at the fire station. A young person who took part in the programme said:
"I think it was a brilliant experience. It helped me, and others, meet people in similar situations, share our interests and learn the importance of teamwork. We discovered that even when the smoke is thick, we can work together to get out safely."
In addition to helping young people develop new skills and confidence, the programme also strengthens relationships between young people and emergency services, helping to build trust and positive engagement within local communities.
The initiative forms part of Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service's wider prevention and community engagement work, creating opportunities for young people to engage positively with firefighters and gain experiences that support their future development.
