At its meeting on 10 September 2026, Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet approved a £2.067 million investment into local education infrastructure.
Primarily funded through housing developer contributions and the High Needs Capital Allocation, the additions to the 2026/27 Education Capital Programme will deliver facility upgrades and expand Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision at four county schools.
Bidford on Avon CE Primary School (£1.55 million): Developer funding will be used to relocate the on-site early years provision to a standalone building, increasing nursery capacity by 10 places and adding a dedicated space for two-year-olds. The vacated space will be refurbished to create additional teaching space for the school
Ashlawn School, Rugby (£367,000): Developer contributions will fund an extension to current hard courts and create an additional Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) to accommodate recent increases in pupil numbers resulting from local housing growth.
Riverside Academy, Rugby (£145,000): Financed by developer contributions, works will modernize existing classrooms to create a whole-school SEND space, a sensory breakout room, and improved outdoor facilities, including a forest school store and a hexagonal outdoor classroom.
Wembrook Primary School, Nuneaton (£9,000): Funded by the High Needs Provision Capital Allocation, this scheme establishes a specialist resourced provision for up to eight pupils with communication and interaction needs by carrying out some minor works to an existing space in the school, including the creation of a dedicated calm room.
Cllr Wayne Briggs, Portfolio Holder for Children & Families, Education and SEND, said: “I am delighted that Cabinet has approved these targeted investments. The new resourced provision at Wembrook Primary and the SEND spaces at Riverside Academy are essential steps toward expanding local specialist capacity and ensuring mainstream inclusion for children across Warwickshire."
Cllr James Crocker, Portfolio Holder for Finance and Property, added: "By strategically leveraging £2.058 million in developer contributions, we are ensuring that housing growth directly funds the education infrastructure required to support it.
“Approving these proposals allows us to meet our statutory duties and improve school facilities without requiring additional borrowing or revenue funding, representing a highly efficient use of capital for the county."
