Young Drivers Parent Seminar Social V1

Passing the driving test is just the beginning of the journey for Warwickshire’s newly qualified drivers.

To help keep the county’s newest motorists safe, Warwickshire County Council is inviting parents, carers, and young drivers to attend a free, interactive webinar on Thursday, 1 October 2026.

Titled Together on the Driving for Life Journey - Parental Support for Young Drivers Beyond the Test, the session is designed to equip families with the tools and knowledge to safely navigate the crucial first year of independent driving.

The Microsoft Teams webinar will run from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with an extended 15-minute Q&A session until 7:15 pm for those who wish to ask specific questions. The event is primarily aimed at the parents and carers of 17 to 24-year-olds who are either approaching their driving test or have passed within the last year (particularly the first six months). Young drivers are strongly encouraged to join the session alongside their parents.

Research shows that the first few months of independent driving are the highest risk period for new motorists. The webinar aims to highlight the significant influence parents continue to have after the L-plates are removed, providing practical advice on how to foster a supportive environment without causing family conflict.

Attendees will learn how to:

Manage high-risk situations: Navigate common dangers such as driving with peer passengers, nighttime driving, and in-car distractions.

Understand post-test influence: Recognise the crucial role parents play in shaping long-term driver behaviour.

Communicate effectively: Maintain ongoing involvement in the young driver's progress while avoiding friction and arguments.

Promote safe independence: Set gradual milestones that build confidence and experience safely.

Save lives: Play a direct role in contributing to the county's long-term casualty reduction targets.

Cllr Stephen Shaw, Warwickshire County Council Portfolio Holder for Transport and Planning, said: "Passing the driving test is a huge milestone for young people, but the real learning begins when they take to the road independently,"

“Parents and carers play an absolutely vital role in shaping safe driving habits long after the L-plates come off. This webinar is a fantastic opportunity to give families the tools they need to manage high-risk situations like night driving and distractions, helping to reduce casualties on Warwickshire’s roads and ensuring our young people return home safely."

Places for the webinar are completely free but must be reserved in advance.
