Young people across Coventry and Warwickshire can now access a new website offering clear, honest information about vaping and nicotine, helping them make informed choices about their health.
Launched by Warwickshire County Council in partnership with Coventry City Council, the new online hub – www.cloudcontrol.info – has been designed specifically for children and young people aged 12 and over.
Cloud Control aims to respond directly to the growing concerns about vaping prevalence among young people. Research with local under 18s found that many of them want to quit vaping, but don’t know where to go for help. Many are more likely to seek advice independently, or from friends.
One local young person said:
“I started [vaping] 4 years ago. I wish I'd never done it. It helps to distract me when I am struggling with my mental health. I can't quit. I am worried about the effects it has on my health.”
In response to increasing concerns, the new Cloud Control website offers straightforward, fact-based information about vaping and nicotine. Although the site was created by Public Health experts, the content and design were shaped by the ideas and feedback from Coventry and Warwickshire teenagers. It includes videos featuring young people sharing their experiences as well as information to explain how nicotine can affect the body and practical tips to either cut down or stop using nicotine products.
Cllr Anne-Marie Sonko, Portfolio Holder for Social Care and Health at Warwickshire County Council said:
“Young people have told us that they want honest information about vaping and nicotine, rather than lectures about what they should do. At the same time, we know there are real health risks in using nicotine products, including addiction and impacts on developing brains.
“This new website brings those two things together: clear, factual information that young people can explore in their own time, helping them feel more confident in making decisions about their health.”
Dr Allison Duggal, Director of Public Health and Wellbeing, Coventry City Council added:
"We know that many young people are exposed to confusing messages about nicotine and vaping. That's why it's so important that they have access to simple, trusted information where they can get the facts without judgement.
"We want young people to know that nicotine provides a false sense of calm. While it can feel like it's helping in the moment, it actually creates dependence and can leave people feeling like they need nicotine to cope.
"By giving young people honest information, we can help them feel more confident in making informed choices that work for them in the long term."
Parents, carers, teachers and professionals are also encouraged to use the site to support conversations with children and young people and signpost them to appropriate services.
