The Women’s Tour returns to Warwickshire on Thursday 13 June as the county hosts a stage of the race for the fourth time.
And this year sees an ending with a difference. As well as racing through the streets of Warwickshire’s towns and villages, the riders will race to a breathless finale amid the rolling hills of Burton Dassett Hills Country Park.
Also new to this year’s 159km stage will be the starting venue with crowds gathering in Warwick’s Market Square to cheer the riders out of the blocks.
Now firmly established as one of the UK’s leading free to watch sporting events, the Warwickshire Stage of the Women’s Tour has been hailed by riders and event organisers SweetSpot alike as ‘the best stage of the whole tour’ noting the county’s meticulous planning of the event, its well-maintained roads and enthusiastic crowds, particularly the thousands of school children, who line the roads.
This year’s tour will see the world’s top 15 female cycle teams, which include all five previous winners of the Tour take part, making it one of the most competitive tours to date.
The benefits to Warwickshire have been growing year on year. As well as showcasing Warwickshire’s many attractions to a global audience, it has also seen crowds increase year on year, most notably from outside Warwickshire with around 60% of last year’s 105,000 estimated attendance coming from beyond the county’s boundaries.
This, of course, has terrific benefits for the county’s local economy with the additional revenue generated to the local economy at an estimated net £2,669 million according to independent research.
The tour comes on the back of the recent announcement that the men’s tour, the Tour of Britain, is also returning to Warwickshire in September. Final details are yet to be confirmed but the route will also see riders race to the finish line at Burton Dassett Hills.
