A number of free sessions are being run for parents and carers of children and young people in Rugby to help them understand well-being issues including school refusal.

With one in four people experiencing a mental illness at some point in their life, Warwickshire County Council is currently highlighting different ways in which people can help themselves and their children to improve their well-being, maintain positive mental health or reduce experiences of low mood and stress.

A free coffee morning and information session for parents and carers – ‘Understanding and supporting children and young people with School Refusal’ - is being held at Moriarty’s Café & Gallery, 28 Regent Street, Rugby CV21 2PS on Thursday 6 June from 9.30am – 11.00am.

The session, which is being provided by RISE – the name for Coventry and Warwickshire’s emotional wellbeing and mental health services for children and young people - will give parents and carers an understanding of what school refusal is, who it affects and why.

They will take away practical tips and activities that can be done at home to support a child who is refusing to attend school and find out how to put together an action plan to support their child with school attendance.

Parents and carers can also find out where to go locally of they are worried about their child’s attendance and emotional well-being.

Parents and carers should book their free places in advance by emailing risecommunityoffer@covwarkpt.nhs.uk or calling 07917 504682.

Families and young people that would prefer a one-to-one face-to-face consultation with a mental health professional can book a consultation slot of up to 45 minutes to speak in confidence with a member of the Specialist Mental Health Professionals Team.

This can be done by e-consultation, phone or in person, with sessions available at Moriarty’s Café and Gallery on Thursday 16 May and Thursday 4 July.

To book your one-to-one consultation, email risecommunityoffer@covwarkpt.nhs.uk or call 07917 504682.
