Westgate Primary School in Warwick has received a five star food hygiene rating – the highest rating possible – from the Food Standards Agency.

The school’s catering premises, which are run by Midlands-based school caterers, Educaterers, were inspected by food safety officers and rated ‘very good’ across the board.

Hygienic food handling, cleanliness and the condition of the facilities and building, and the management of food safety all received the top marks from the Food Standards Agency.

Westgate Primary is the latest school that receives a school meal service from Educaterers to achieve five out of five stars, with over 85% of Educaterers’ schools having the very highest rating.

School catering services are checked for their hygienic handling of food, including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage, and the cleanliness and condition of their facilities and buildings, including having an appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control, to enable good food hygiene.

Inspectors also make sure that systems or checks in place to ensure that food served is safe to eat, look for evidence that staff know about food safety, and that standards will be maintained in future.

Mr Matthew Watson, Head Teacher of Westgate Primary School, said: “I am delighted that Westgate Primary School has been awarded a food hygiene rating of 5 out of 5 stars again – the highest rating possible.

“The Food Standards Agency look for everything from well-maintained food storage systems to prevention of cross-contamination and staff training, and these are of the very highest standards at Westgate.

“I would like to thank the Educaterers team at Westgate Primary – Miss Emma Lowe, Miss Natalie Kelsey and Mrs Jyoti Kanwar - for the way in which they go out of their way to make lunchtimes fun for the children with their themed days and Friday prizes.”

Terry Tredget, Director of Educaterers, said: “We’re delighted that the catering premises at Westgate Primary School have been given a five star rating by the Food Standards Agency, along with so many other schools that receive a meals service from Educaterers.

“Our focus is on giving pupils a safe, caring and delicious food experience at school and the 99% of our schools that have four or five star ratings are testament to the expertise and passion of our Educaterers staff.”

Educaterers provide over 120,000 school meals every week to over 200 schools across Warwickshire, Birmingham and Oxfordshire. For more information visit www.educaterers.co.uk.
