Warwickshire County Council has agreed in principle to contribute £1.5m to support the purchase by Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council (NBBC) of the town centre Co-Operative building, as part of the ambitious Transforming Nuneaton (TN) programme.
The County Council’s contribution will be a significant boost which will help move forward the plan to purchase the former Co-Operative department store.
The building on Abbey Street is one of the key investment opportunities in the town. The majority of the street is owned by NBBC - a key partner on the development of a leisure based scheme for the site which will play a significant role in regenerating the western end of Nuneaton town centre.
The design and use of the development will depend upon future investment, but NBBC will start work on the preparation of the site as soon as possible.
Monica Fogarty, Chief Executive of Warwickshire County Council said:
“We are keen to work with our partners to make this positive contribution and move forward the plans to transform Nuneaton for the benefit of residents, businesses and people visiting the town. At our recent visit to MIPIM, we placed a very strong emphasis on developing Nuneaton and held a dozen meetings with national development and investment companies, all of which will result in follow up meetings in this country as we move to the next stage for transforming the town centre.”
The Transforming Nuneaton Partnership, consisting of the Borough Council, the County Council and Coventry & Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership, has already delivered significant road improvements at Coton Arches and embarked on a new residential development at Church Street, with McCarthy and Stone.
