An event to celebrate and share the diverse cultures and traditions of the community of Bedworth was held on Saturday 9 March at Bedworth Liberal Club.
Organised by volunteers of the Exhall Multicultural Group, over 150 residents came together at the event which showcased storytelling, music and dance from a wide variety of cultures, and clothing from Nepal, India, Poland and the UK during a fashion parade.
There were also stands featuring ornaments and artwork from the Nepalese Cultural Store, the Gurdwara Dhan Dhan Baba Vadbhag Singh Ji,(BVS) Bayton Road, Exhall and Di’s Glassworks. The event was a huge success and raised £178 which will go towards funding another event over the summer.
Present at the event were Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service and Warwickshire Police Cadets, who provided information and advice on joining the services, and welcomed guests to the event. Also supporting were partner organisations and community groups, who gave information about local services.
Coinciding with Warwickshire and Coventry’s Year of Wellbeing, the event not only promoted the diversity of Bedworth, but also tackled issues of loneliness and isolation by bringing the community together. Attendees also received free health checks from the Healthy Living Network.
Deputy Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth Cllr June Tandy said: “We have a wonderfully diverse and rich community in Nuneaton and Bedworth which is something to celebrate and be proud of. I congratulate the Exhall Multicultural group on holding this event and I look forward to supporting their future endeavours”.
Cllr Richard Chattaway, County Councillor for Bedworth Central said: “The event has a wonderful atmosphere and I am very pleased to see the widespread support of statutory partners, including the police and fire service, plus a range of community and voluntary organisations. Well done to the Exhall Multicultural Group for organising this and my thanks to them for what they are doing on behalf of Bedworth people and communities”.
Speaking on behalf of the group, committee member Ramesh Anand thanked everyone for their support. He added: “ This has been a great celebration of our shared cultures. We are looking to build on this by creating groups for socialising and activities such as knitting, walking, cookery groups and exchanging world recipes. We hope to have more events like this and plan an event in June and a further event to celebrate Diwali together”.
