Warwickshire smokers are being urged to ‘Quit4Good’ on No Smoking Day next Wednesday (13 March) to benefit their health and safety – and their wallet.
Most people know that smoking is bad for their health, but not everyone is aware that it can dramatically increase the risks of you having a fire in your home too.
No Smoking Day is a national initiative aiming to both inspire smokers to quit and provide them with the resources to do so. This year the theme is ‘today is the day’. Thousands of smokers choose this day as the day they start to stop smoking. Making the decision to become smoke free will benefit you and your family now and in the future, and there is support available to help you in Warwickshire.
Warwickshire’s stop smoking support service, Quit4Good is a free 12 week programme providing regular support from expert Stop Smoking Advisors and stop smoking medication (prescription payable) available at a number of Pharmacies and GPs across the county. Alternatively smokers can choose to quit online with the support of a Stop Smoking Advisor through the national smokefree online service.
Pregnant smokers who want to “Quit4Baby” can get help from a Specialist Stop Smoking in Pregnancy Advisor who can visit them at home, or at one of their clinics or meet at a local community venue if you would prefer. Today’s the day to quit smoking! More information is available on the https://quit4good.warwickshire.gov.uk/quit4baby/ website.
Cllr Les Caborn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Health, said: “Stopping smoking is the best thing you can do to improve your health and wellbeing. It’s also good for your wallet, with the average smoker saving £3,000 per year after quitting. The Quit4Good service has helped thousands of smokers in Warwickshire to become smoke free, and research has shown that you are four times more likely to stop smoking for good if you sign up to the Quit4Good 12 week programme.”
Smoking is also the single biggest cause of accidental fires in the home, often because of people being careless when smoking in bed or not taking care extinguishing their cigarettes properly after drinking alcohol.
Cllr Andy Crump, WCC Portfolio Holder for Fire & Community Safety, said: “Every six days, someone dies from a fire caused by cigarettes or smoking materials. Despite a fall in the overall number of fires caused by these products, it’s still the biggest cause of accidental fires in the home across the country.
“Warwickshire Fire and Rescue services offers free safe and well visits to help people reduce their risk of fire in the home, including advice to help stop smoking and manage associated risks. If you know of anyone, especially an elderly or vulnerable resident, who would benefit from a free visit please visit www.warwickshire.gov.uk/safeandwellvisit or call 01926 466282 today!”
