Warwickshire County Council’s (WCC) Cabinet has approved funding totalling £6.645m for a range of measures to improve and upgrade the A445 Emscote Road.
The scheme includes a new segregated cycle superhighway providing a high-quality, safe, direct and continuous cycle and pedestrian route between Warwick and Leamington.
The scheme along the A445 Emscote Road will also see vital maintenance work carried out to the listed Portobello Bridge, alongside improvements to key junctions along the route which suffer from congestion during peak hours including: Greville Road, Rugby Road, Princes Drive/Warwick New Road, Warwick Place and Regent Street/A452.
Councillors agreed to allocate £6.645m from the County Council’s capital investment fund with the total cost expected to exceed £10m.
Councillor Jeff Clarke, Warwickshire County Council's portfolio holder for transport and planning, said: “The A445 Emscote Road upgrade will greatly improve the everyday commute for local residents and encourage more local people to cycle, while improving air quality as congestion is reduced.”
Cllr Clarke continued: “We are committed to improving the county’s cycle network and investing in active travel. This project builds on our recent investment in the new cycle path linking Kenilworth and Leamington (K2L). It also aligns with central government’s bold vision for cycling and walking as set out in their ‘Gear Change’ document published earlier this year.”
Designs for the scheme have been drawn up by Sustrans, a company with significant experience in delivering similar infrastructure across the UK. The expected delivery date of the project is 2023.
