Warwickshire County Council is supporting Learning Disability Week, in order to raise awareness of feelings of isolation and loneliness for those residents with a learning disability.
The theme for Learning Disability is the importance of friendship during lock down. The issue of Isolation has been an important issue for the council to combat, which has seen it introduce virtual alternatives to many of its front facing services.
Isolation may be particularly hard for someone with a learning disability. With this in mind the council will be joining forces with its partners, to showcase a range of online resources and some of the services that are available for people to access.
Drama, photography, singing and life skills are just a few of the virtual get together topics on offer from the Adult Community Learning team at Warwickshire County Council. All of the courses can either be accessed via Zoom or downloaded to a computer. To join the mailing list for these courses please email lucywhittington@warwickshire.gov
Councillor Les Caborn, Portfolio holder for Health at Warwickshire County Council said:
“Whilst lockdown has been helpful in reducing the spread of the Covid-19 virus, it has meant that many are away from the people they love to spend time with. This is certainly the case for people with a learning disability who have a tight knit community here in Warwickshire. It is imperative that we share online resources and information on available services to help alleviate any worry they may be feeling currently.”
He added:
“I want to say thank you to all of those support staff who work tirelessly to ensure services are up and running across the county.”
The council is working with partners and providers to ensure people with a Learning Disability are aware of what is available to them to help avoid social isolation.
Off the back of this, the council would like to hear from anyone with a learning disability about your friendships and how your friends have helped you through the current pandemic.
All you have to do is send your story of friendship through to us via Facebook or Twitter @Warwickshire_CC (and include photo and a video too, if you want). Remember to use the hashtag #MencapFamily
