Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Why is Bidford River Bridge closed to vehicles?

The Bridge is undergoing Capital Repair and Renovation works.

Major structural repair works and stone restoration programme to masonry arches and elevations. Signage and warning to be improved on approaches.

What is the formal diversion route?

The signed diversion route is to the south of Bidford on Avon, via the B4085 and use of the A46. Local commuters are known to use their own route through Welford on Avon. Due to the structural weight limit and classification of Binton Bridge (on the C46 Binton Rd), the use of automated temporary traffic lights has been used to control the ‘give-way’ single lane bridge crossing. This has been in attempt to regulate the local traffic flow and prevent vehicles from queuing on the bridge.

Is Bidford River Bridge open to cyclists?

Cyclists are instructed to dismount on crossing the bridge. Barriers on site are positioned to encourage this in respect to the limited space used by others and fencing which lines the area affected. This includes pedestrians, wheelchair-users, pushchairs, and dog-walkers. WCC, as the Highway Authority, would appreciate the co-operation of cyclists obeying the instructions to dismount for the duration of the repairs.

What consents are required for the repairs to the bridge?

Due to the bridge’s historic and environmental context, a number of consents are required before works can begin. These include Scheduled Monument Consent (SMC) for works affecting the protected structure, Environment Agency (EA) consent for activities near or over main watercourses and Avon Navigation Trust (ANT) consent where works are undertaken along the navigable section of the River Avon. All consents have been obtained in consultation with the relevant authorities ensuring full compliance with statutory requirements.

What is the start date on site?

We are planning to start works in February 2026.

What is the duration of structural repairs?

It is estimated that six months working time is required for the stone masons to dismantle and rebuild the cutwater faces and parapet at this location. The programme is reliant on suitable weather conditions.

When will the road be open to vehicular traffic?

The road will be closed for two weeks when the works start in February 2026 and one week in the end of the planned works.

Noise

Noise and dust levels will be carefully managed throughout the project to minimise disruption to nearby residents, businesses, and road users. Works will be carried out during standard daytime hours, and noisy activities will be scheduled to avoid early mornings and evenings where possible. Dust suppression techniques, such as dampening down surfaces and using protective sheeting, will be employed to reduce airborne particles. The project team will monitor environmental impacts regularly and respond promptly to any concerns raised by the public.
