Thinking about volunteering?

We are looking for volunteer car drivers to help take people to and from non-emergency medical appointments.

We have volunteers of all ages who want to give back to the community and lend a helping hand to those who need it. It’s not just our service users who benefit – becoming a volunteer can offer lots of opportunities for you too.

Please select the most appropriate scheme below and contact them directly for details on how to volunteer with them.

What does the role involve?

The role involves safely transporting patients, who would otherwise be unable to get to their appointments, to specified locations in the Warwickshire area. You would drive your own vehicle.

You can volunteer for as many hours as you like. Some of our volunteers work a couple of hours a week and others up to five days a week.

Generally, we will give you two days notice when we ask if you can provide transport to a user, and we’ll give the exact details as soon as possible after the booking is made. This will normally be by telephone.

What are the requirements?

Applicants must:

  • hold a full UK driving licence
  • have a suitable vehicle with insurance and current MOT
  • be willing to undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check
  • have a serious passion for helping others.

We provide all our volunteers with full training. However, there are some qualities which we feel our volunteers need, such as being:

  • patient and sensitive to the needs of others
  • honest and trustworthy
  • reliable and punctual
  • tolerant, non-judgemental and able to respect confidential information
  • able to work on your own initiative and as part of a team.

You don’t need any special insurance but do need to declare that the car will be used for volunteer driving (most insurers do not apply a premium for this). Please check the Association of British Insurers for volunteer friendly companies.

Benefits and expenses

Volunteering should not affect your right to claim benefits. The only money that would be paid to you would be mileage expenses upon proof of receipt – expenses are currently paid at a rate of 45p a mile.

Each Voluntary Car Scheme will pay expenses differently and this will be covered in your induction.
