Project aim and objectives

The Mouth Care Improvement Programme aims to provide care home staff with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to improve residents’ oral health. The programme focuses on training Oral Care Champions to lead oral health practice, introduce and maintain up to date guidance and implementing clear oral care documentation.

How the project works

Oral Care Champions play a key role in embedding good mouth care practice within care homes. The champions support the training of all care staff, promote consistent daily oral hygiene, and ensure staff know how to access dental services for residents in line with the care homes’ best practice and regulatory expectations.

So far

In Warwickshire, the programme has engaged 56 care homes, trained 245 Oral Care Champions across 53 homes, delivered 56 mouth care toolkits, and provided eLearning access to 538 staff, with 358 completing the training.
