Project aim and objectives

The project aims to improve children’s oral health by helping establish positive brushing habits early in life, in addition to reducing tooth decay, particularly in communities with higher levels of need. It supports consistent messages and practical approaches to oral health, aligning with the national Supervised Toothbrushing Programme for three to five-year-olds announced by the government in March 2025, which focuses on prevention and tackling oral health inequalities.

How the project works

The programme is delivered through early years settings and schools, where in addition to the routine at home, children take part in daily supervised toothbrushing. This evidence-based approach is supported by national funding, which provides free toothbrushes, toothpaste, and educational resources.

So far

Nationally, the scheme is expected to reach up to 600,000 children in the most deprived areas of England, backed by £11 million of investment for local authorities. In Warwickshire, children will benefit from local early years settings and schools taking part in the programme, helping to improve oral health outcomes and give children the best possible start for healthier smiles as they grow.
