Drowning Prevention in Warwickshire

Every year in Warwickshire we respond to reports of people who have entered water and found themselves in difficulty. Between April 2021 and April 2026, crews attended 34 water-related incidents across Warwickshire, with many involving people falling unexpectedly into rivers, canals and lakes.

Water can be dangerous in any season. Even in mild weather, cold water shock can affect breathing and movement, making it difficult to stay afloat. With a wide range of waterways across Warwickshire, hidden hazards are always present.

Simple actions such as keeping away from edges, avoiding alcohol near water and staying alert can help prevent incidents and save lives.

Here's some vital safety advice:

Float To Live

If you unexpectedly enter the water, don’t panic - float to live.

Cold water shock can take control of your breathing and make it difficult to stay calm. Floating on your back helps you regain control and gives you time to think.

What to do:

  • Tilt your head back with ears submerged
  • Relax and try to control your breathing
  • Move your hands and feet gently to stay afloat
  • Spread your arms and legs to improve stability
  • Once calm, call for help or plan how to get to safety
