Summary
The A445 Emscote Road Corridor is one of the busiest and most important routes between Warwick and Leamington. It provides access to homes, education sites, employment areas and town centre destinations. The corridor carries a consistently high volume of traffic throughout the day, with particularly heavy demand during peak periods that places the route under significant pressure.
This high demand, combined with limited road capacity, leads to uncomfortable congestion, slower bus journeys and a corridor that is challenging to navigate on foot or by bicycle. The Emscote Road Sustainable Transport Corridor project aims to address these issues and create a safer, more reliable and more inclusive transport route for all to use.
Aims
- Providing a safe and direct cycle route along the corridor to meet government standards, replacing the current provision which is piecemeal and disconnected, and making cycling a safer and more desirable choice for travel.
- Create high-quality, continuous walking, wheeling and cycling routes, through a safer, fully connected active travel corridor that will encourage more people to choose healthier, more sustainable ways to travel short distances.
- Improve traffic flow at key junctions, by upgrading junction layouts and signal improvements that will help reduce delays and keep traffic moving more efficiently
These measures will be complemented by committed infrastructure upgrades planned for Portobello Bridge and Greville Road.
The scheme will contribute to the wider objectives set out in the Council Plan and Local Transport Plan refresh:
- Improve access to education, retail, health and leisure provision
- Help road users and the community to be safe, healthy and independent
- Deliver a transport network that can meet the demands of local housing and employment growth
- Contribute to improved air quality and reduced carbon emissions to help meet climate change objectives
