Executive summary

The health of people in Warwickshire is the result of a wide range of factors such as the places that we live, the strength of our communities and relationships, whether we can adopt healthy behaviours, and our local health and care services. We describe these factors and their overlap in the four quadrants of the Kings Fund model.

How long are people living in Warwickshire?

Life expectancy is a critical measure of how healthy populations are. The key insights you need to be aware of are:

  • There is variation and inequality in life expectancy across Warwickshire’s districts and boroughs which links to levels of deprivation.
  • Out of the five districts and boroughs, Nuneaton and Bedworth and North Warwickshire have lower life expectancy than the average for England (Life Expectancy at birth 3 year range Male/Female) for 2021-23.
  • Stratford-on-Avon and Warwick Districts have higher life expectancy than England (Life Expectancy at birth 3 year range Male/Female) for 2021-23.
  • Females live longer than males.
  • Longer term trends show a pattern of stagnation across all the districts and boroughs as life expectancy is no longer rising as it has previously

What are the biggest causes of early death in Warwickshire?

The biggest killers in the West Midlands of those aged <70 are neoplasms (where they are malignant this is cancer) at 38% of total deaths and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) which accounts for 22% of deaths. Together accounting for over half of all deaths.

Is there variation across the five districts and boroughs in Warwickshire?

There is a variation showing an overall picture of statistically worse than and similar with England in the north of the county moving towards statistically better in the south of Warwickshire across all four causes of death (cancer, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, and respiratory disease).

Nuneaton and Bedworth stands out in terms of a worsening picture over time when compared to England.
