Asbestos is a naturally occurring silicate material which was widely used as a building material in the UK before 1999. When asbestos fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases, which are responsible for around 4,500 deaths a year. Asbestos is regarded as the greatest single cause of work-related deaths in the UK.
If you have asbestos to dispose of, we would recommend you contact a private waste contractor who is registered to handle the material.
You can find these specialists by contacting members of the Asbestos Removal Contractors Association or visit our hazardous and restricted waste page.
