Our dedicated road Safety Officers are available to visit nurseries across Warwickshire to deliver a Road Safety Session to preschool aged children. Our sessions are suitable to fit in with part of the nursery school day or as a special session for parents to join, so they can share the learning with their children.

Using a game, activity, story and song our dedicated Road Safety Officers and friendly Puppet Mascot Warwick Bear introduce the children to key road safety messages, including always holding hands with a trusted adult and stopping before the kerb.

This session introduces the children to the Warwickshire Road Safety Code to:

  1. THINK about roads
  2. STOP before the kerb and wait
  3. LOOK and LISTEN for traffic
  4. THINK about what to do
  5. CROSS SAFELY with an adult, always holding hands.
  • Game - Our interactive game gets everyone up and moving, using actions and signs to learn the words of the Warwickshire Road Safety Code.
  • Activity - Children take turns to be special helpers as they peep in the road safety box of props. By using props our helpers help to build the Road Safety Code.
  • Story - Our story of ‘Warwick Bear, Tooting Trucks and Busy Bikes’, was written for us by local author Diane Maybe. We read aloud this delightful picture book to remind children how to stay safe when out with their adults.
  • Song – We use a song with a catchy tune to remind the children of the key messages they have learnt.

Children leave the session with something to take home to remind them of their learning and to prompt adults at home to ask what they have found out. Nursery staff are given a copy of the story and song so the learning can be revisited. Nursery staff are also welcome to take photographs of the session for learning journals or to revisit the learning.

If you are interested in booking a session for your nursery please email – roadsafetyeducation@warwickshire.gov.uk
