The A46 Strategic Link Road is a proposed transport infrastructure scheme that is supported jointly by Coventry City Council, Warwickshire County Council and Warwick District Council. The scheme aims to support significant employment and housing growth within South Coventry and the adjoining area of Warwickshire, as well as providing an essential role in managing travel demand generated by significant growth areas within Solihull, clustered particularly around the HS2 Interchange and UK Central, which will put increased pressure upon existing roads, notably the A45 and the A452.

The first phase of this link Road scheme, the improvement of the A46 Stoneleigh Interchange, is fully funded and is currently under construction.

In order to fully realise the wide-ranging benefits of the wider A46 Strategic Link Road and to ensure that it can be adequately funded, Coventry City Council and Warwickshire County Council, in consultation with Warwick District Council, have taken the decision to defer the previously lodged application to the Department for Transport’s for Major Road Network (MRN) / Large Local Major (LLM) programme.

Instead, the Councils consider that a future funding submission will feature a business case for investment in a wider transport package of transport measures, including highway, public transport and active travel improvements.

Work is ongoing to develop a masterplan and the associated transport infrastructure and services through the preparation of the South Warwickshire Local Plan. This is considering how improvements to all modes of transport and their integration will be needed to support sustainable growth across the region.
