Web map and GIS services

Experienced GIS users can access a number of new services and geographic data in a number of forms.

Interactive viewer – Compass

You can view maps and data in your browser using the links below. There are a number of specialised versions, used for viewing different datasets. Each of these viewers contain only a subset of the data available directly via the OGC standards listed lower down on this page.

Historical maps

A viewer containing maps of Warwickshire dating back to the late 19th century. It includes current and recent aerial photography, and current Ordnance Survey mapping.

We have created a viewer which allows easy access to all our spatial data, released under the EU INSPIRE directive.

Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Standards

You can access the technical data files through various viewers, using:

We don’t provide support for these applications, but there are many tutorials available online. For example, a QGIS tutorial for using WMS.

KML files

KML files are used by Google Earth and similar software. This file contains a link to every layer that is served via WMS from our public systems – it is updated nightly to reflect any changes in our services.



Data released on our Compass interactive map viewer, and OGC services is released under the following licenses.

Data that we own is released under the Open Government License v2.

Ordnance Survey data

Some Ordnance Survey data is Crown Copyright.

Ordnance Survey derived data is licensed under the “Public Sector INSPIRE WMS End User Licence”.
