What might happen before an Educational Psychologist is involved?

If you have concerns about your child’s development/progress please share these with the SENDCo, Head of Year and/or Inclusion Manager at their school. If school staff have concerns about your child’s development/ progress they will share this with you.

Before an Educational Psychologist is involved, a cycle of assess-plan-do-review will be started within school; this is known as the Graduated Approach. This includes school staff using their resources and training to firstly assess the situation and your child’s skills; from this they will make a plan to support your child (sometimes called an Individual Education Plan, or similar); they will spend some time putting the plan in place (do); and then they will review by tracking the progress made.

In-school support may continue, or if limited progress was made school staff may contact other services, such as the Educational Psychology Service, for additional support.

If the Educational Psychologist becomes involved, a further assess-plan-do-review cycle (DOCX, 141 KB) will happen with the Educational Psychologist. Ongoing support may be needed, and the Educational Psychologist may continue to be involved, or it may step back to the level of in-school support.
