Consumer, Financial and Cyber-Crime Education for Schools

Free Resource to support PSHE and Citizenship – Consumer Education, Financial Literacy and now Cyber-Crime Awareness.

Financial literacy/money management is now part of the curriculum.

Warwickshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service runs free on-line educational sessions in the areas of being a consumer, managing personal finances and cyber-crime awareness. These can be tailored to a school’s particular requirements and are available for all pupils in Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and Sixth form.

The educational sessions, which run under the umbrella programme ‘Talkingshop’ are delivered on-line and in real time by Trading Standards consumer, financial literacy and cyber-crime experts.

Over 5000 Warwickshire students have already participated in the Talkingshop educational programme.

The programmes cover:

Financial Literacy, including:

  • Opening a bank account
  • Payday and other high interest loans
  • Budgeting
  • Credit and debt
  • Contracts (for example for mobile phones)
  • Store cards
  • Priority loans

Consumer Rights, including:

  • Your statutory consumer rights
  • Returning damaged and mis-described items
  • Your rights in a sale
  • Shopping from home
  • Buying on auction websites

Cyber Crime, including:

  • Safe shopping online
  • Online banking
  • Social media safety
  • Protecting your PC

Thousands of Warwickshire students have already benefited from educational sessions delivered by experts via Talkingshop.

Talkingshop sessions can accommodate a class of approximately 30 students at any one time, working in pairs on computers in a school IT suite. Session dates and times are flexible to accommodate school timetables and educational inputs can be adapted to meet the learning needs of all students (Year 7 to Year 13).

Students log on to a secure web based application using a unique web address and Trading Standards experts share a Power Point Presentation with them.

The application allows Trading Standards to communicate with the students in real time as they progress through the session. Experts can also set poll questions for students to
answer.

Teachers receive a copy of the answers provided by students and the feedback from Trading Standards experts at the conclusion of the session.

Talkingshop is a free service available to all Warwickshire schools, including academies.
