First aid rescue emergency care (REC)

This course looks at practical treatments in the outdoors. There are classroom-based sessions but practical sessions always happen outdoors, come rain, wind or shine. Our trainers have a wealth of instructing and mountain rescue experience. No technical jargon and fancy bandaging – stuff that works in the wild. You’ll need your waterproofs and some drama skills. There are no prerequisites for the course which is recognised by:

  • the Mountain Training Boards
  • British Canoeing
  • Royal Yachting Association

The course covers modules including:

  • environmental injury and rescue
  • stretchers and carries
  • how to deal with an emergency far from medical help practical scenarios (the helicopter crash is a real test…!)
  • use of improvised techniques and an introduction to rescue equipment
  • resuscitation

The course is over two days (16 hours) with a combination of training and ongoing assessment. It can be done on a non-residential or residential basis. The residential course covers full board from Sat a. to Sun pm Accommodation on Fri night is possible at extra cost.
