Hill and Moorland Leader (HML) training and assessment courses

The HML award is for those leading groups in the hill and moorland areas of the UK and Ireland. It is used extensively by those involved with delivering the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, especially up to Silver level expeditions, in remote terrain that is not as steep or rocky as ground covered by Mountain Leaders.

Both training and assessment courses are run from Marle Hall on a residential basis. For training you must have registered with the HML scheme, have at least one year of hill walking experience and have completed at least 20 quality hill walking days.

The training course runs for three days, covering components such as:

  • navigation skills
  • the environment
  • group management
  • the weather

The assessment course is also three days, with the emphasis being placed on navigation.
