Introduction to work experience
Work experience is defined as a short period spent in a workplace, usually by young people, to learn what it is like to do that kind of work.
Work experience has a key role to play in preparing people for the workforce and as both a large employer and the Local Authority we have a vital role to play.
Work Experience has changed over the last few years and the Councils offer has evolved with it. As well as the traditional 1 or 2-week work experience offer to students, we can also offer work experience through Job Centre Plus and we are open to other arrangements. Please just ask.

Armed Forces Community
As part of the Warwickshire County Council's commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant the Council offers work experience to the Armed Forces community. The Council recognises that those who serve and their families may be disadvantaged as a result of their Service and wishes to contribute to reduce this disadvantage.

Make the most of your placement
- At the start of your work experience, take time to discuss with your supervisor what your interests are and what you would like to get out the placement.
- Be proactive and work hard on every task, however big or small.
- Talk to people working in other areas to broaden your understanding and experience.
- Where possible, make your supervisor aware of your skills and previous experience.
- Keep a copy of the work you have done while at the Council, as this may be useful for your portfolio. Always check there are no copyrights involved.
- Make sure you have researched the department/programme you are working on and get an understanding of the kind of work they do on a day-to-day basis.
- Whilst at the council take the opportunity to network and make connections with other employees.
- Spare some time to talk to employees about how their own career paths have unfolded and what their role is in the Council.
- If you don’t know what you are doing, or you are feeling overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to ask for help from your supervisor or other team members.
- Listen to and act on any feedback you receive from your supervisor.
Just remember to be professional and ask lots of questions. Most of all treat it like a job – and be proactive!
