In 2021, Central Government announced £30.5m grant funding for local authorities to support people living with excess weight and obesity to lose weight and maintain healthier lifestyles. The short-term funding was allocated to local authorities based on their population size, obesity prevalence and deprivation levels.

The adult weight management (AWM) services grant will provide an opportunity to deliver 12-week targeted weight management and ensure equitable access to population groups, most in need, such as:

  • People from black, asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) communities
  • Maternal obesity (preconception and post-natal)
  • Individuals registered with a severe mental illness
  • Individuals with a physical and/or learning disabilities
  • Individuals diagnosed with post covid syndrome

Delivery models

The grant is to enhance and uplift current provision and support individuals who are not readily accessing pre-existing weight management programmes. We have designed two delivery models to help residents lead a healthy lifestyle.

Deliver targeted weight management programmes in new settings

These may include:

  • Residential care homes
  • Supported living
  • Day opportunities
  • Places of worship
  • Community centre

The adult weight management providers will offer tailored nutritional guidance and advice, and support individuals to make positive changes to lead a healthy lifestyle. If you would like more information about an adult social care or community setting hosting an adult weight management programme, please email fitterfutures@warwickshire.gov.uk

Identify new referral avenues with Health Professionals through partnership working and targeted communication. Eligible individuals would attend pre-existing adult weight management programmes within the community.

New avenues would be:

  • Reproductive health clinics
  • GP and/or health visitor 6-8 post natal health check
  • Post COVID syndrome clinics/appointments
  • Severe mental illness annual health check
