How much waste do we produce in Warwickshire?

In 2008/2009, 296,447 tonnes of municipal waste was produced in Warwickshire.

The majority of this was household waste, which made up 275,226 tonnes.

In the year 2008/09, 95,107 tonnes of Warwickshire’s biodegradable municipal waste was landfilled, which is 34,258 tonnes less than our original allocated allowance of 129,365 tonnes of MBW for the year.

What currently happens to waste produced in Warwickshire?

In 2008/09 50% of household waste was sent to landfill, 21% was recycled, 22% was composted and 7% was sent to an energy from waste facility.

Reduce

Waste prevention and reuse is critical to the development of sustainable waste management practices and was highlighted as one of the key objectives in Waste Strategy for England 2007. Figures for 2007/08 show that the annual kg of waste produced per head was 521kg.

Recycling and Composting

The five district Councils are leading on enhancing kerbside collection services for recyclable materials and have made significant investments and improvements to their kerbside collection schemes.

Warwickshire County Council have started a series of improvements to the nine household waste recycling centres (HWRC) in Warwickshire, increasing the types of material it is possible to recycle and generally improving overall facilities. The recycling rates achieved at the household waste recycling centres in 2008/09 are listed below.

  • Hunters Lane - 56%
  • Shipston - 56%
  • Grendon - 60%
  • Wellesbourne - 59%
  • Stockton - 57%
  • Judkins - 41%
