The Sustainable Travel Section are keen to promote all types of sustainable travel. Due to their relative fuel efficiency and traffic beating ability, this includes mopeds and economical motorcycles.
Some of us remember when mopeds were funky the first time around (er, 1975 with Jasper Carrott’s hit). Back then, mopeds were unrestricted mini-motorcycles, and owning one was a right of passage for 16 year olds.
Now, the moped too has come of age. They are sleek and reliable machines. Most are of the scooter type, providing excellent weather protection, storage and comfort.
Mopeds can cut through congestion with ease. Insurance is cheap, and most can achieve 100MPG or more - with a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions.
Around £2000 can buy machine, helmet, lock, jacket, gloves and insurance: less for a second-hand machine.
As an alternative, or in addition to a car, a moped is ideal. Tuck it away in your garage. Use it when the weather is good, or when another family member takes the car. | | |
