Hazardous Sites | |
| Certain industries are identified as high risk / hazardous sites, due to chemicals, explosives, or other dangerous substances, which they may use in their processes or store. The Health & Safety Executive regulates hazardous sites under the COMAH Regulations (Control of Major Accident Hazards, 1999), and establishes a duty on such sites to prepare for emergencies. | ![]() |

The local authority also has a duty under COMAH 1999, to prepare adequate off-site emergency plans to deal with the consequences of a major accident on site. This duty is performed by the Emergency Planning Unit working closely with industry representatives from these and other sites, together with the Health & Safety Executive to develop such plans, to ensure the safety of the neighbouring public and environment to such sites. | |
