Civil Partnership Registrations | |
| | |
| On 18th November 2004, The Civil Partnership Act 2004 received Royal Assent. The provisions of the Act were implemented on 5th December 2005 allowing same-sex couples to form a civil partnership for the first time on 21st December 2005. | |
| | |
| This Act allows same-sex couples to register their partnership legally. On forming a civil partnership a couple will thereby acquire similar rights and responsibilities to those of a married couple such as employment and pension benefits and recognition under intestacy rules. | |
| How do we register our partnership? | |
| | |
| Each partner will need to give legal notice of their intended partnership to the local authority in which they have been resident for previous seven days. However, if one of the partners is subject to immigration control it will be necessary for both partners to attend a designated register office together to give the required notice. Further information on this aspect of the process can be obtained by contacting the relevant Register Office for your area: Nuneaton (North Warwickshire Borough and Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough areas) Tel: 02476 375209 Rugby (Rugby Borough area) Tel: 01788 551829 Warwick (Warwick District and Stratford upon Avon District areas) Tel 01926 413724 Civil Partners will need to produce passports as evidence of identity and nationality and some proof of residence in the form of utility bills, Council Tax bill, bank statement or any other form of official documentation. If either party has been through a marriage or other partnership previously they would also have to produce evidence of its dissolution. The notices of intended partnership will be placed on public display for a period of 15 clear days after which the partnership can be formed. The partnership can be formed in any local authority, irrespective of the residence of the couple, and can also be formed in an Approved wedding venue (see below). (please note that partnerships will have to be formed between the hours of 8am and 6pm reflecting the position for marriages). | |
| Do we need to have a ceremony? | |
| | |
| Warwickshire County Council offers ceremonies to couples as an optional addition to the legal registration. It gives couples a chance to celebrate their partnership with family and friends, if they so wish, but if partners prefer to undertake the legal formation of their partnership without ceremony, that is perfectly possible. Please notify the Register Office of your wishes when booking the appointment to register the partnership. | |
| | |
| How do I book to register my partnership? | |
| Firstly, you need to decide on a venue. If you are intending to simply register your partnership without a ceremony, you can do this at one of our Register Offices (see below). If you are having a ceremony, you may wish to hold this either a Register Office or an Approved wedding venue.
